Due to the massive networking of the present digital era, the technological approaches have raised many challenges for urban governance. The decision making processes are dealing with the increase of citizen participation, “bottom-up” initiatives, new planning methods and accountability. This paper explores different e-planning tools that can be used to develop healthy communities and achieve better practices in the fields of urban governance and city services.
Spatial
planning innovation requires linked actions, cooperation, metropolitan strategy
and leadership (Florentino, 2011). But the knowledge supported by the results
of social networks interaction is nowadays a central element. More recent
research have shown also that it’s possible to balance the energy efficiency in
urban areas, according to new e-planning tools (Amado, 2015).
The
sustainable vision for a growing urban society demands feed quality, besides basic
water and energy concerns. As always, e-planning tools are needed to connect directly
the consumers to the producers of the same region. Those different resources
will then be managed more efficiently, improving simultaneously the health of
their citizens and local neighborhoods.
A second
example is related to the competitiveness of urban areas. The historically city
centers saw how modern areas have generated their own attractiveness and
patterns, looking for services and residential sectors towards natural
environments in the context of higher mobility standards. The development of an
urban digital economy will balance these movements of value, helping
regeneration.
